ABOUT ADAM B. LEVOWITZ

Adam B. Levowitz is a visionary producer, composer, librettist, & director whose innovative work spans opera, musical theater, and orchestral performance. With over 40 years of experience in the performing arts, Levowitz has established himself as a transformative force in contemporary opera, reimagining classical works for modern audiences while creating bold new theatrical experiences.

Levowitz's recent Off-Broadway production of Mozart's Don Giovanni: A Rock Opera, which he conceived, wrote, orchestrated, directed, and produced, received widespread critical acclaim. Critics described it as "an intensely charged new production… equal parts homage and upheaval," with comparisons to "Mozart filtered through Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy, and a dash of Hedwig." International Mozart scholar Magnus Tessing Schneider praised the production for staying "true to the Enlightenment spirit of Mozart and Da Ponte," concluding that "a vision truer to Mozart should come in the shape of a Broadway show."

The production, which premiered at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre before moving to New York's The Cutting Room, was hailed by DC Theatre Arts as "thrilling," by Theater Pizzazz as "pure adrenaline," and by The Knocturnal as "a refreshing modern take." Critics consistently praised Levowitz's ability to maintain Mozart's musical sophistication while creating what one reviewer called "a piece of theater with teeth, stakes, and humor."

Levowitz is currently developing Father Grigori, an original opera that blends political mythology with surrealist narrative structure. This ambitious work reflects his ongoing commitment to expanding opera's contemporary relevance while exploring complex themes through sophisticated musical storytelling.

Throughout his career, Levowitz has demonstrated exceptional versatility as both artist and administrator. He has successfully managed complex productions involving union negotiations, budget oversight, and cross-functional team leadership while maintaining complete creative control. His work with the Adam Levowitz Rock Orchestra featured Tony-nominated Broadway performers including Kerry Butler, Darius De Haas, and Charl Brown in innovative concert productions at prestigious venues including BB King's NYC and The Howard Theatre DC.

As a composer and arranger, Levowitz created "The Home of Warrior Care," the official song of Walter Reed Army Hospital, during his service with the 257th U.S. Army Band. His educational work has included directing productions at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology, where he led choir performances at Carnegie Hall.

Levowitz holds a Master of Music in Theory & Composition from the University of Louisville, where he was a Moritz von Bomhard Fellow, and a Bachelor of Music in Theory with Trumpet & Vocal Concentration from the University of North Texas.

Levowitz's work is characterized by his belief that opera and musical theater should be emotionally immediate and accessible without sacrificing artistic integrity. His productions consistently demonstrate what critics have called "an incredible amount of potential" and work that is "bursting with heart, yearning to become something great." He approaches classical works with what one reviewer described as "clever self-awareness," creating productions that honor their origins while speaking directly to contemporary audiences.

Whether reimagining Mozart for rock audiences or developing entirely new operatic works, Levowitz continues to push the boundaries of what opera can be while maintaining the highest standards of musical and theatrical excellence.
